Sensitive renovation

The Townhouse Renewal

Period character. Present-day comfort.

Illustrative design story — a proposed solution, not a completed client project.

Olive panelling, period cornice, an ochre armchair and a walnut sideboard concealing the television.

The brief

Keep the character. Make room for possibility.

How do you introduce contemporary entertainment without losing the room that made you love the house? The design starts with the details worth keeping: original cornices, tall sash windows, wall panelling and oak parquet. The proposed integration respects those features and works with a personal collection of furniture, art and books.

The starting point is the interior, not a list of equipment. A long walnut sideboard gives the screen a place to disappear. Speaker positions, cable routes and access would be agreed with the architect, electrician and cabinetmaker before finishes are completed. Existing construction would determine what can sensibly remain concealed.

Proposed integration

A sitting room first

With the screen away, the room belongs to conversation, reading and music. The proposed invisible speakers sit behind the ceiling finish, preserving the original visual rhythm. Their suitability and coverage would be assessed against the actual construction and listening requirements.

The same room. Two moments.

An evening, at a touch

The same townhouse sitting room with a television raised from within the walnut sideboard.

A single entertainment command would bring a screen sized for the room up through the sideboard and select the sound. The cabinet remains the same piece of furniture in both views. The lift opening, ventilation and cable movement would be coordinated as part of the joinery design.

Walnut sideboard, pale stone top and olive wall panelling beside the room’s sash window.

Quietly considered

Stone, walnut and precise joints carry the visual story. Service access would be designed in from the beginning, so hidden technology need not become inaccessible technology. Controls stay discreet and within comfortable reach.

What it makes possible

Your room, on your terms.

The intended result is a home that feels recognisably yours, with music and film available when wanted and the technology visually absent when they are not.

Beyond the first day

Made to be lived with.

Handover would include agreed room settings and a practical introduction. Support arrangements and maintenance access would be agreed for the actual project.
